Scott Hales is a writer, historian, cartoonist, and literary critic from Ohio and Utah. He has a BA in English from Brigham Young University and an MA and PhD in English from the University of Cincinnati. From 2015 to 2025, he served as a general editor and lead writer for Saints, the four-volume narrative history of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He currently works as the history curator at the Church History Museum in Salt Lake City, Utah.
Scott’s scholarly and creative writing explores the intersections of culture, landscape, faith, and memory in American and Mormon history and literature. He has published work in various journals, including War, Literature, and the Arts; The Edgar Allan Poe Review; International Journal of Comic Art; Religion and the Arts; BYU Studies; The Journal of Book of Mormon Studies; and Wayfare.
In 2012, Scott co-founded the Mormon Lit Blitz, the world’s premier contest for Mormon microliterature, with James Goldberg and Nicole Wilkes Goldberg. Two years later, he debuted his critically acclaimed webcomic The Garden of Enid: Adventures of a Weird Mormon Girl on the social media platform Tumblr. In 2016 and 2017, the comic was published as a two-part graphic novel by Greg Kofford Books. Scott published his first collection of poetry, Hemingway in Paradise and Other Mormon Poems, with assistance from the Mormon Lit Lab in 2022. The following year, he self-published Fragments of the Cross, a collection of devotional poetry and art, in a limited edition for friends and family. His most recent collection of poems, Sacred Scar, will be published by Greg Kofford Books in 2026.
